How to Respond to Sticky “Shoulds”

If you have a sticky mindset that includes the word “should,” here is a little 3-step process for greater clarity and conviction.

(These three steps are based around imperfect acronyms of the word “should.” The letter U was especially tricky!)

Step 1: Surrender Hopes and Opportunities Up to the Lord’s Domain. Take a moment and ask yourself, what am I seeking here? And then offer that to God: God, this is what I wanted, but I know you’re in control of the outcome.

Step 2: Seek the Heart Of our Lord’s Desires. God, what do you desire for me in this situation? What is your heart for me? What unwritten rules and expectations am I bringing to the table – and which are you inviting me to let go?

Step 3: Serve Him Out of Loving Devotion. In this situation, God, how are you inviting me to respond in a way that glorifies you?  How can I choose to respond, with autonomy, from a place of peace and dignity – especially in difficult situations?

So whenever you’re stuck on a sticky “should” thought, such as…

I should be more X…
I should have done X…
I should try harder to X…

Choose to respond in a new way: surrender your hopes to God, seek his desire for you, and then choose hoe you will serve him out of love.
